There is really just one symptom of BMS, although some people may have extra signs and symptoms. It is a burning sensation on the oral mucosa, which means your tongue, cheeks, gums, lips, or palate. Is small fiber neuropathy the same thing as burning mouth syndrome?
There are some experts who believe that small fiber neuropathy is a third type of BMS, but it’s more likely that it can cause secondary BMS.
Is there any way to get instant relief from burning mouth syndrome?
Some people get some quick relief from burning mouth syndrome when they use medicated mouthwashes, but there are no other treatments that can provide instant relief from BMS pain. That said, some at-home treatments, like using a numbing agent (Orajel, for example) could be helpful for some people. The relief is temporary though, lessening as the product wears off. How long does burning mouth syndrome last? Does burning mouth syndrome go away?
Just as burning mouth syndrome appears out of the blue, it can also disappear. Some research shows that up to half of people with BMS will see a partial improvement within 6 or 7 years after they started feeling the burning sensation. For some, it will go away completely. But for many, the pain never goes away.

There are no doctors who specialize in treating burning mouth syndrome. It’s one of those conditions that doesn’t fall into one particular specialty. It’s not easy to find a real burning mouth syndrome specialist, let alone someone in your area. You will likely have a better chance if you live in a big city or near large healthcare systems.
